St Andrews Castle stands on a rocky headland at the edge of St Andrews, Fife, overlooking the North Sea. Built in the late 12th/early 13th century as the residence of the Bishops and Archbishops of St Andrews, it became the setting for one of the Scottish Reformation’s most brutal episodes: the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546 and the siege that followed. 🏰 HISTORY — A BISHOP'S PALACE TURNED BATTLEGROUND

⛪ A Residence Fit for Bishops and Kings

Built in the late 12th or early 13th century, St Andrews Castle served as the residence of the Bishops and later Archbishops of St Andrews, the most senior churchmen in medieval Scotland. Royal visitors passed through its halls too: the future James I was educated here under Bishop Henry Wardlaw, and James III was born within its walls in 1445.

🔥 Murder, Martyrdom and the Bottle Dungeon

The castle's darkest chapter began with the Bottle Dungeon, a 24-foot pit cut bottle-shaped into solid rock below a tower, where prisoners were simply dropped and forgotten. Protestant reformer George Wishart may have been held here before his execution in 1546; in retaliation, his supporters assassinated Cardinal David Beaton and kept his murdered body in the very same dungeon.

⚔️ The Siege, the Mine and the Countermine

Beaton's murder sparked a full siege in 1546-47, during which the attacking Regent Arran's forces dug a tunnel deep into the rock to undermine the castle walls. The defenders, hearing the digging, cut their own narrow countermine to intercept it, leading to underground hand-to-hand fighting. Rediscovered only in the late 1800s, these tunnels are now among the best-preserved siege mines anywhere in Europe.

🍯 The Bottle Dungeon

Visitors can peer down into the notorious Bottle Dungeon, now covered by a protective iron grate, and imagine the grim fate of those lowered into its airless depths. It remains one of the most infamous prison cells to survive from medieval Britain.

Descend into the claustrophobic 1546 siege tunnels, crouching through the defenders' narrow countermine before it opens into the attackers' larger mine — a rare, tangible piece of medieval siege warfare. The visitor centre's exhibition and multisensory displays set the historical scene before you explore the clifftop ruins and their sweeping coastal views.

Due to ongoing masonry conservation, parts of the castle occasionally close to the public — check the Historic Environment Scotland website before travelling if a specific area is a must-see. The siege tunnels are tight, low and genuinely claustrophobic, so they may not suit everyone. Combine your ticket with the Cathedral for the best value if you're spending a full day in the town.
