Brodie Castle — 400 Years of the Brodie Clan in Moray

Rose-coloured and turreted, Brodie Castle rises from the gentle parkland of Moray as the ancestral home of Clan Brodie, whose family seat has stood on this land since the 12th century. Behind its 16th-century tower house walls lies one of Scotland’s finest small art collections — Dutch Old Masters, French furniture and Chinese porcelain — gathered by a family who called Brodie home for over 400 unbroken years.

Brodie Castle stands about 4 miles west of Forres in Moray, on Scotland’s Moray Firth coast, within easy reach of Inverness. Built in 1567 as a Z-plan tower house on land the Brodie family had held since the 12th century, it was burned in 1645 and later expanded into a Scots baronial mansion in the 19th century. Gifted to the National Trust for Scotland by Ninian Brodie, who lived there until his death in 2003, it remains open to visitors today.

🏰 HISTORY — 800 YEARS OF THE BRODIE FAMILY

📜 Land Granted by a King

The Brodie family's association with this land stretches back to the 12th century, with tradition holding that King Malcolm IV granted the estate to the clan around 1160, later confirmed by Robert the Bruce. The present tower house was built in 1567 as a defensible Z-plan structure, reflecting the turbulent times of 16th-century Scotland.

🔥 Burned and Rebuilt

Brodie Castle was burned in 1645 during the turmoil of the Scottish Civil Wars, but the family rebuilt and expanded it over the following centuries. Between 1824 and 1845, major work transformed the castle into a Scots baronial mansion, blending the original 16th-century guard chamber with a cosy 17th-century wing and a sprawling Victorian extension — three centuries of architecture under one roof.

🎨 The Last Laird and a Gift to the Nation

Brodie Castle remained a private family home for over 400 unbroken years until Ninian Brodie, the last laird to live there, gifted it to the National Trust for Scotland. He continued living in part of the castle — now let as the Laird's Wing holiday apartment — until his death in 2003, ensuring the family's home passed into public care rather than being sold or lost.

🎨 The Art Collection & Library

Guided tours take in fine French furniture, Chinese and English porcelain, and a painting collection spanning 17th-century Dutch Old Masters to 20th-century Scottish Colourists. The castle's library holds around 6,000 volumes, and the ornate plaster ceilings throughout are considered some of the finest examples of their kind in Scotland.

🐰 The Playful Garden & Daffodils

Outside, the Playful Garden features whimsical sculptures including Scotland's biggest bunny, alongside the National Daffodil Collection — over 100 varieties that carpet the grounds each spring. A woodland walk with a large pond and wildlife observation hides rounds out the estate, making Brodie as much a nature destination as a historic house.

Brodie Castle sits directly off the A96, about 4 miles west of Forres and 6 miles east of Nairn, with easy access from Inverness around 20 miles away. The main driveway leads to a large free car park, with a dedicated Blue Badge car park close to the front door.

🙌 Visitor Tips

The castle interior is accessible by guided tour only — arrive at least 15 minutes early at the Welcome Centre, and note that photography is not permitted inside. Visit in spring for the daffodil displays in full bloom, and budget extra time for the Playful Garden if visiting with children.
